GERRITSEN G , GERRITSEN E & GOUTBEEK A (1999) Large numbers of Little Gull Larus minutus at eastern Lake IJsselmeer, August 1998. LIMOSA 72 (2): 64-65.

Lake IJsselmeer is the biggest freshwater lake in The Netherlands, and a very important staging area for migrating Black Terns Chlidonias niger and Little Gulls in summer and autumn. Several thousands Little Gulls also winter in this wetland. On 1 August 1998 almost 1000 adult and subadult Little Gulls were counted on nearly 1% of the total surface of the lake. The average density of 61 birdslkm' was much higher than in previous July/ August counts in 1976, 1978 and 1982 (0.3-0.5Ikm'). It is not impossible that the total number on Lake IJsselmeer on 1 August 1998 was higher than previous maximum estimates of 10 000-15 000.
