LOONEN MJJE & VRIES C DE (1995) A sedentary population of Greylag Goose Anser anser in the SW-Netherlands. LIMOSA 68 (1): 11-14.

An exponential increase in the number of Greylag Geese Anser anser breeding at Scheelhoek, SW-Netherlands, coincided with an increase of goose damage on agricultural fields in adjacent areas. Because the area is also frequented by large flocks of migrating and wintering Greylags, which have been increasing as well, a neck banding program was intitiated in order to distinguish the local breeding flock from other Greylags. The local breeding population proved highly sedentary throughout the year. This in contrast with breeding populations of other Dutch localities, known to winter in Spain. This phenomenon may be caused by the availability of suitable food in autumn and winter, and the mild local climate in winter. A possible feral origin of the flock could also playa role.
