OUWENEEL GL (2007) Hobby Falco subbuteo picking a Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula out of water. LIMOSA 80 (3): 108-108.

On 5 August 2006 the author observed a flock of about 15 Ringed Plovers on a narrowmuddy bank in the Dutch Delta area, when a low-level hunting Hobby succeeded in approaching the waders very closely. The plovers flew up in panic and one landed into the water, about two metres away fromthemudflat. With rapid wingbeats the Hobby hovered very close above the plover, trying to seize the bird every time when it tried to fly up. After several attempts the Hobby succeeded in picking up the plover out of the water, and flew away with its prey. Probably the Hobby came to this hunting technique by coincidence.
