In 1997 a pair of Whiskered Terns successfully bred in a
colony of Black Terns near Lake IJsselmeer, The
Netherlands. The nest contained two eggs and at least
one chick was reared. In The Netherlands, the species is rare as a breeding bird, with confirmed records of up to
eleven pairs in 1938, 1945, 1958, 1961 and 1965.
