GROOT JB (1997) Occurence of the Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis in The Netherlands. LIMOSA 70 (1): 27-32.

In this paper the occurrence of the Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis in The Netherlands until 1995 is discussed. The first known observations are from 1973. The number of observations remained very small until 1985 (Fig. I). The number of observations increased slightly since then. In 1993, a peak year, Ruddy Ducks were reported from 33 locations. The number of birds recorded increased from 1985 through to 1994, when a maximm1:l of 48 birds was reported. Ruddy Ducks are observed throughout the year, but most records are from winter (November-February, Fig. 2). Most observations are from the western part of The Netherlands, in winter as well as in summer (Figs. 3 and 4). Breeding was proved in four cases (adult birds with ducklings in 1973, 1992 and 1994), and there are several observations of displaying birds in suitable habitat during spring in 1988-94.Ruddy Duck Oxyura jamaicensis
