NUIJEN H (1992) Short contributions: Long-eared Owls Asia otus taking a sandbath. LIMOSA 65 (3): 125-125.

Six to eight Long-eared Owls were observed taking a sandbath near Hilversum, The Netherlands, on July 28th-30th 1991. The birds arrived at 22hlO-22h25 at a sandy pit 35-40 min diameter among heathland bordered by forested area. After some ten minutes of sandbathing the birds disappeared. Weather was dry and warm (maximum 28?C) during this period. On July 31st and August 1st, when it had been raining slightly and temperature had fallen considerably, the owls appeared at the pit at the same time of day, but disappeared without taking a sandbath. Probably the soil had become too humid and/ or too cold for sandbathing Long-eared Owl Asio otus
