JONKERS DA (1992) Population trends of breeding birds in The Netherlands in 1969 - 1985. LIMOSA 65 (3): 116-124.

During 1969 - 1985 inventories of breeding birds were conducted annually in eleven study areas scattered over The Netherlands. The data were combined with those of areas in the country with at least three years of similar research in the same period (fig. I). Data of 125 species of breeding birds were gathered. For 97 of these species the data were sufficient for an analysis of the population trend (tab. I). Of species migrating to Africa south of the Sahara, eleven showed a negative trend and five a positive one. Of species wintering in Western Europe or the Mediterranean, four increased and one declined. Of resident species five showed a decline and 14 showed an increase (fig. 2). For some examples see fig. 3. In general, a majority of species breeding in farmland showed decreasing trends while most woodland species were stable or increased. The population decline in severallong- distance migrants could have its origin partly in conditions in the wintering areas in the Sahel. However, the situation in the Dutch breeding habitats could have had its influence as well. The impact of the local situation holds also for birds of prey and for resident birds. The main question is whether or not my data may be considered representative for The Netherlands. As study plots in the Sand E of the country were underrepresented (fig. I), and as urban areas, coniferous woodland and some other habitats were not studied at all, population trends in my study are not valid for all species and for The Netherlands as a whole. In general, trends will have good validity for species breeding in wetlands, meadows and deciduous woodland, especially in the middle, Wand N of the country. ##### Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus Grey Heron Ardea cinerea Purple Heron Ardea purpurea Mute Swan Cygnus olor Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna Gadwall Anas strepera Common Teal Anas crecca Mallard Anas platyrhynchos Garganey Anas querquedula Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata = Spatula clypeata Common Pochard Aythya ferina Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula Western Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus Common Buzzard Buteo buteo Common Kestrel Falco tinnunculus Eurasian Hobby Falco subbuteo Grey Partridge Perdix perdix Water Rail Rallus aquaticus Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus Eurasian Coot Fulica atra Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus Ruff Philomachus pugnax Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago Eurasian Woodcock Scolopax rusticola Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata Common Redshank Tringa totanus Common Tern Sterna hirundo Black Tern Chlidonias niger Stock Dove Columba oenas Common Wood Pigeon Columba palumbus Eurasian Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto European Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus Tawny Owl Strix aluco Long-eared Owl Asio otus European Green Woodpecker Picus viridis Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis Blue-headed Wagtail Motacilla flava White Wagtail Motacilla alba Winter Wren Troglodytes troglodytes Dunnock Prunella modularis European Robin Erithacus rubecula Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe Common Blackbird Turdus merula Song Thrush Turdus philomelos Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus Common Grasshopper Warbler Locustella naevia Savi's Warbler Locustella luscinioides Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus Marsh Warbler Acrocephalus palustris European Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus Great Reed Warbler Acrocephalus arundinaceus Icterine Warbler Hippolais icterina Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca Common Whitethroat Sylvia communis Garden Warbler Sylvia borin Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla Common Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus Goldcrest Regulus regulus Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata European Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus Marsh Tit Poecile palustris Willow Tit Poecile montanus Coal Tit Periparus ater Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus Great Tit Parus major Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla Eurasian Golden Oriole Oriolus oriolus Eurasian Jay Garrulus glandarius Eurasian Magpie Pica pica Western Jackdaw Coloeus monedula Carrion Crow Corvus corone Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris Eurasian Tree Sparrow Passer montanus Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs European Greenfinch Carduelis chloris European Goldfinch Carduelis carduelis Common Linnet Carduelis cannabina Eurasian Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothraustes Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella Common Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus
