MEIJER R & NAT J VAN DER (1989) Bluethroat Luscinia svecica cyanecula saved by the Biesbosch?. LIMOSA 62 (2): 67-74.

White-spotted Bluethroat Luscinia svecica cyanecula Bluethroat Luscinia svecica = Cyalnosylvia svecica The Biesbosch is one of the most important freshwater wetlands in the Netherlands. Until the 2nd of November 1970 it was a freshwater tidal area. After the Haringvliet was closed the tide almost disappeared and the area changed drastically. As the major part of the area was no longer inundated during high tide, the numbers of many breeding bird species changed. The Bluethroat was one of the most successful species. From 1970 to 1988 the population increased from 100-200 to about 1900 pairs. Consequently some 70% of the Dutch and 40% of the NW. European population breed in the Biesbosch. Because of the present favourable population development, the species is not endangered at the moment. Its position remains vulnerable, however, because succession in the vegetation may lead to substantial habitat losses.
