BERGH LMJ VAN DER (1985) Waterfowl census in January 1983. LIMOSA 58 (1): 23-26.

In this paper the results of the waterfowl census in J anuary 1983 in the Netherlands are given. Total number of waterfowl amounted to 1 817 600 birds (570 areas, ct. fig. 1). Most numerous species were Mallard, Wigeon, Coot, and Tufted Duck (tab. 1). Goosander and Smew were less numerous than in 1982, most probably as a result of the mild winter of 1982/83. A synopsis of the numbers of areas and waterfowl (fig. 2), Wigeon and Mallard (fig. 3), and Tufted Duck and Pachard (fig. 4) for 1973-83 is given. Of the four large counting districts an upward trend in Wigeon numbers was only found for the area of the Grote Rivieren (tab. 2). ##### Little Grebe Tachybaptus ruficollis Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus Mute Swan Cygnus olor Bewick's Swan Cygnus bewickii Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope Gadwall Anas strepera Common Teal Anas crecca Mallard Anas platyrhynchos Northern Pintail Anas acuta Garganey Anas querquedula Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata = Spatula clypeata Red-crested Pochard Netta rufina Common Pochard Aythya ferina Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula Greater Scaup Aythya marila Common Eider Somateria mollissima Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis Black Scoter Melanitta nigra Velvet Scoter Melanitta fusca Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula Smew Mergellus albellus Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator Goosander Mergus merganser Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus Eurasian Coot Fulica atra
