BAKKER D (1950) A new breeding-case of Anser a. anser (L.) in the Netherlands. LIMOSA 23 (3): 357-364.
The latest breeding record of the grey lag-goose in the Netherlands dates from
1909. At April 7th, 1950 a nest of this species was found in the Northeastpolder,
after the presumed breeding of this bird in 1948 and 1949. The nest was found
in a region of about 55 acres of shallow pools with a vegetation of reed (Phragmites
communis Trin.) and club rush (Scirpus macitimus L.).
The nest was surrounded by water of a depth of about 30 ems. It was built of
dead reed stalks and attached at the reed vegetation. Not floating. The top of
the nest was about 25 ems above the watersur£ace. The measures of the nest
are shown in table 1. The weights and measures of the four slightly bred eggs
are mentioned in table 2.
Unfortunately after the discovery of the nest the birds did not return and so
nest and eggs have been deposited in the State Museum of Natural History at
Leyden.
