On August 25th 2003 a dead Eurasian Wren was found, entangled in a web of a Four-spot Orb Weaver Araneus quadratus, spun across a ditch in the Castenrayse Vennen near Horst, the Netherlands. One of the flight feathers was entangled in a 2 m long anchor thread running from the top of the web to the vegetation. Published records of birds caught in spider webs are relatively rare in Europe. Based on an international study, birds with a low weight and short wings seem to get stuck more often than heavier, long-winged birds. This record fits nicely with this finding. At least 54 bird species have been recorded trapped in spider webs, mostly in the Neotropics, and relatively often involving hummingbirds (but up to the size of a Laughing Dove Streptopelia senegalensis). However this seems to be the first such record for a Eurasian Wren, although three instances of entangled North American wren species have been described.
