A chronological review is presented of the institutional history of the Dutch Ornithological Union ('NOU') and its predecessors, from the foundation of the Dutch Ornithological Society ('NOV') in March, 1901 to the present. An inventory of the archives of these organisations is presented in an Annex. The archives were inventoried in 1993-94, and are now housed in the Amsterdam Municipal Archive, where they can be consulted
