OOSTERVELD E (1995) Male and female Redshanks Tringa totanus totanus are distinguishable in the field. LIMOSA 68 (2): 78-80.
Breeding Redshanks in the northern part of The Netherlands with obvious male display- and copulation behaviour had blacker crown, nape, mantle and flanks as compared to birds with obvious female behaviour. Birds identified as females had a paler brownish-grey plumage. Of birds sexed on the basis of these plumage differences, 75% appeared to be sexed correctly as determined by their roles in courtship- and copulation behaviour. A similar result was obtained in Black-tailed Godwits Limosa limosa Common Redshank Tringa totanus
