HEG D (1991) Short contributions: Adult Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus seizes juvenile Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta.. LIMOSA 64 (1): 26-27.

An adult Great Black-backed Gull seized and killed a foraging full grown juvenile Avocet within 30 seconds on the mudflat of the Waddenisland Vlieland. The bird was approached in low flight. A part of the pectoral muscles was eaten, despite severe attacks of an adult Avocet and two Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus. After 2-4 minutes the corpse was left, seemingly without a specific reason. A small survey among bird-watchers revealed two more prey species, not mentioned before in litterature: an adult Redshank Tringa totanus and an adult Wigeon Anas penelope, although the latter has only probably been killed. Adult Great Black-backed Gull Larus marinus seizes juvenile Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta.
