DIJK AJ VAN (1990) Severe winters have strong impact on first five years of BMP. LIMOSA 63 (4): 141-152.

In 1984 SOVON launched the BMP, a breeding bird monitoring scheme in The Netherlands. Its methodology closely resembles that of the British Common Bird Census, making use of the combined version of the mapping method. Analysing species maps however is done by the observers themselves, using species-specific acceptance levels. Indices are calculated according to the method proposed by Mountford (1982). In 1984-88, 227-400 plots were studied annually. The number of paired plots increased from 186 to 337 (fig. I, 2). Most plots encompass about 51 ha and are located in farmland, woodland or other (semi-)natural habitat (tab. I). Altogether, about 20820 ha was studied in 1988. The 1984-88 results (appendix I) are heavily influenced by the three severe winters of 1984/85, 1985/86 and 1986/87 (tab. 2). As severe winter weather with snow cover reached SW-Europe several times, not only resident species were affected, but partial migrants and shortdistance migrants as well (fig. 3, appendix I). Moorhen, Wren, Song Thrush, Meadow Pipit, Goldcrest and other species showed remarkable decreases in The Netherlands, but populations of some species began to recover sooner than expected. Long distance-migrants showed, in general, increasing tendencies. As The Netherlands is a small country, a comparison of the Dutch results with those obtained elsewhere can be instructive (fig. 4, 5). Because of methodological differences, more communication and co-operation between countries involved in monitoring is desirable. In the near future BMP will focus on a more even distribution of study-plots over the country, including all habitat-types (fig. 6). ##### Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus Mute Swan Cygnus olor Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna Gadwall Anas strepera Common Teal Anas crecca Mallard Anas platyrhynchos Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata Common Pochard Aythya ferina Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula Grey Partridge Perdix perdix Common Pheasant Phasianus colchicus Common Moorhen Gallinula chloropus Eurasian Coot Fulica atra Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus Northern Lapwing Vanellus vanellus Common Snipe Gallinago gallinago Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata Common Redshank Tringa totanus Stock Dove Columba oenas Common Wood Pigeon Columba palumbus Eurasian Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto European Turtle Dove Streptopelia turtur Common Cuckoo Cuculus canorus Tawny Owl Strix aluco Long-eared Owl Asio otus European Green Woodpecker Picus viridis Black Woodpecker Dryocopus martius Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major Lesser Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos minor Eurasian Skylark Alauda arvensis Barn Swallow Hirundo rustica Tree Pipit Anthus trivialis Meadow Pipit Anthus pratensis Blue-headed Wagtail Motacilla flava White Wagtail Motacilla alba Winter Wren Troglodytes troglodytes Dunnock Prunella modularis European Robin Erithacus rubecula Common Nightingale Luscinia megarhynchos Bluethroat Luscinia svecica Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus Whinchat Saxicola rubetra European Stonechat Saxicola rubicola Northern Wheatear Oenanthe oenanthe Common Blackbird Turdus merula Song Thrush Turdus philomelos Mistle Thrush Turdus viscivorus Common Grasshopper Warbler Locustella naevia Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus Marsh Warbler Acrocephalus palustris European Reed Warbler Acrocephalus scirpaceus Icterine Warbler Hippolais icterina Lesser Whitethroat Sylvia curruca Common Whitethroat Sylvia communis Garden Warbler Sylvia borin Blackcap Sylvia atricapilla Wood Warbler Phylloscopus sibilatrix Common Chiffchaff Phylloscopus collybita Willow Warbler Phylloscopus trochilus Goldcrest Regulus regulus Spotted Flycatcher Muscicapa striata European Pied Flycatcher Ficedula hypoleuca Long-tailed Tit Aegithalos caudatus Marsh Tit Poecile palustris Willow Tit Poecile montanus Crested Tit Lophophanes cristatus Coal Tit Periparus ater Blue Tit Cyanistes caeruleus Great Tit Parus major Eurasian Nuthatch Sitta europaea Short-toed Treecreeper Certhia brachydactyla Eurasian Golden Oriole Oriolus oriolus Eurasian Jay Garrulus glandarius Eurasian Magpie Pica pica Western Jackdaw Coloeus monedula Carrion Crow Corvus corone Common Starling Sturnus vulgaris House Sparrow Passer domesticus Eurasian Tree Sparrow Passer montanus Common Chaffinch Fringilla coelebs European Greenfinch Carduelis chloris Common Linnet Carduelis cannabina Eurasian Bullfinch Pyrrhula pyrrhula Hawfinch Coccothraustes coccothraustes Yellowhammer Emberiza citrinella Common Reed Bunting Emberiza schoeniclus
