On 25 January 1990, a very heavy gale from southwestern direction swept The Netherlands. The next morning 16 Black-headed Gulls Larus ridibundus and three Common Gulls Larus canus were found dead near a gull roost. The birds appeared to be knocked down when they crossed from the northeast a row of populars situated perpendicular to the direction of their evening flight. Of four birds the intestines were protruding from bill or anus.
