Common Eider Somateria mollissima In March 1988, a juvenile female Eider was found dead on the Dutch Frisian Island of Texel. The immediate cause of death seemed to be five up to 13.4 cm long American razor clams Ensis americanus (or E. directus) that stuck in the oesophagus and gizzard. E. americanus is a new immigrant in the European waters. Shortly after settlement in the Wadden Sea, it became already a common prey for Oystercatchers Haematopus ostralegus and Herring Gulls Larus argentatus, to which now the Eider as a consumer can be added
