Ret research into the prevention of oil victims on our coast is not new. Already in the fifties and sixties were counts of animal carcasses on the beach run and centrally stored. Since then, under loek with the necessary breaks, passed by the then National Institute for Biological Field Research for Nature Conservation (RIVON), the Dutch Youth League for Nature Study (NJN), and finally in 1977 ended up with Dutch-Stookoliesiachtoffer Research (NSO). From 1965 to date, each lo year around late February on one count of carcasses beach, covering a lo much as possible the Dutch coast was investigated. this counting closed since 1972 in addition to similar counts in Britain, France, Belgium, BR Germany, Denmark and Portugal and Norway sometimes. Through international coordination of the Royal Society for Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Participants always kept informed of each other results.
