BIJLSMA RG (1988) Short contributions: Population growth in the Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto in the Netherlands. LIMOSA 61 (1): 41-41.
Eurasian Collared Dove Streptopelia decaocto The Dutch population of Collared Doves increased rapidly from five pairs in 1950 to 100000-150000 pairs in 1979-83 (fig. I). The yearly growth rate was 90% in 195054,70% in 1955-59,40% in 1960-64, 30% in 1965-72, and 10% thereafter. The population is evidently approaching its saturation level. A very high reproductivity, thought to be one of the most important factors explaining the rapid increase, is shown for villages in the central part of the Netherlands in 1971-78. Breeding took place from the first week of January till the end ofNovember, with a laying peak from April to July. Of 865 eggs in 450 clutches, 659 eggs hatched, and 514 young fledged (59.4%). On average, each pair produced 4-5 clutches per year, resulting in an annual average of 2.4-3.0 young/ pair
