A census of breeding birds in SE.Friesland (65 000 ha, fig. 1) during 1967-84 comprised 140 species (app. 1, fig. 2). Population changes in the Stellingwerven (12000 ha) showed in general decreasing numbers for farmland birds, most likely due to modern farming practices; and increasing numbers for woodland birds, probably in connection with maturing forests (tab. 1). Population changes, habitat choice, and densities of most breeding species in SE. Friesland resemble to what is found in the neighbouring province of Drenthe (van Dijk & van Os 1982). The estimated totals of many passeriformes in SE. Friesland outnumber the totals for the province of Friesland presented in the check-list Vogels in Friesland (van der Ploeg et al. 1976, 1977, 1979). For several species new estimates for Friesland are given (app. 1). It is concluded that mis-interpretation and mis-calculations, probably partly connected with insufficient knowledge of the landscape and breeding birds in SE. Friesland, have caused the underestimations in Vogels in Friesland.
