Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta In 1985, 469 breeding pairs were counted in the Dollard (fig. 1). After a reduction of the seasonal organic waste discharges in 1982, the Avocet's potential feeding area was enlarged with c. 30%. The number of breeding pairs showed no increase from 1969-85 (tab. 1) although in the same period both the Dutch and NW. European populations significantly increased in numbers.
