BAKKER L & LOK CM (1985) Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo, a new breeding bird of Voorne. LIMOSA 58 (4): 145-148.

Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo Probably in consequence of river pollution the Cormorant disappeared in 1960 as a breeding bird from the SW. Netherlands. Also as a non-breeding visitor it decreased markedly during 1955-70. Since 1970, the number of Cormorants has increased and in 1984 a colony of 26 nests was established at the Brede Water, a lake in the dunes of Voorne. In 1985, the birds returned in larger numbers and at least 195 nests were counted. In contrast to other Dutch colonies, where the species feeds almost exclusively at fresh water, the birds of the Brede Water prefer to fish at sea. In addition, harbours, fresh and salt water lakes, and rivers are visited. In most feeding areas, peak numbers occur in August. The majority of the birds then consists of immatures. One of them was ringed as a nestling at Bnendegardss0, Denmark
