In August 1982 and 1983 six times a Hobby was seen hunting, attacking, and carrying terns in the Southwest- IJsselmeer area. The Hobby carried a Common Tern Sterna hirundo once and a Black Tern Chlidonias niger thrice, in one instance the Black Tern escaped. A description of the hunting behaviour is given. Hunting on the almost invariably high migrating terns was probably performed by the male of a breeding pair c. 4 km away.
