GERRITSEN GJ (1984) Ornithological significance of the Barsbekerbinnenpolder, NW. Overijssel. LIMOSA 57 (4): 141-145.

Overijssel (fig. 1, 2). These counts made clear that this polder is an important breeding area for meadow birds (tab. 1) and an area of international importance for wintering Bewick's Swan. Bean Goose and White-fronted Goose (tab. 2). The polder appears to be an important feeding area for migratory Lapwing, Black-tailed Godwit, Ruff and Snipe during summer and autumn, and during the breedingseason for Purple Heron, Marsh Harrier, Curlew, Black Tern and Rook. The last five species concern breeding birds from the adjacent wetlands De Wieden and Zwarte Meer. The ornithological value of the Barsbekerbinnenpolder is related to the high water table, the relatively extensive agricultural use and a low level of disturbance. Furthermore, the location of the polder between two important wetlands (De Wieden and Zwarte Meer) should be noted (fig. 2). The present values of the Barsbekerbinnenpolder are threatened by expansion of Zwartsluis and a lowering of the water table, especially in winter.
