OSIECK ER (1982) Wetlands of ornithological importance in the Netherlands. LIMOSA 55 (2): 43-55.

This paper gives a list of 60 wetlands in the Netherlands which are ornithologically important (excluding two areas extending across the national boundaries). The areas have been selected on the basis of the numerical distribution of breeding birds belonging to 15 species (tab. 1) and of non-breeding birds belonging to 42 species (tab. 2). Of these areas, 56 qualify as Wetland of international importance (including four qualifying only for breeding birds). Some data are given on the effectiveness of this inventory for the species listed in tab. 1. On 23 May 1980 the Netherlands ratified the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance Especially as Waterfowl Habitat and designated six wetlands under the Convention (and in addition six in the Netherlands Antilles). ##### Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris Purple Heron Ardea purpurea Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia Western Marsh Harrier Circus aeruginosus Hen Harrier Circus cyaneus Montagu's Harrier Circus pygargus Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta Sandwich Tern Thalasseus sandvicensis = Sterna sandvicensis Common Tern Sterna hirundo Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea = Sterna macrura Little Tern Sternula albifrons = Sterna albifrons Black Tern Chlidonias niger Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus Bluethroat Luscinia svecica = Cyalnosylvia svecica Great Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia Mute Swan Cygnus olor Bewick's Swan Cygnus bewickii Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus Taiga Bean Goose Anser fabalis Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus = Anser fabalis brachyrhynchus Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons Greylag Goose Anser anser Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis Dark-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna Eurasian Wigeon Anas penelope Gadwall Anas strepera Common Teal Anas crecca Northern Pintail Anas acuta Northern Shoveler Anas clypeata = Spatula clypeata Common Pochard Aythya ferina Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula Greater Scaup Aythya marila Common Eider Somateria mollissima Black Scoter Melanitta nigra Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula Smew Mergellus albellus Red-breasted Merganser Mergus serrator Goosander Mergus merganser Common Crane Grus grus Eurasian Coot Fulica atra Eurasian Oystercatcher Haematopus ostralegus Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta Common Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula Grey Plover Pluvialis squatarola Red Knot Calidris canutus Curlew Sandpiper Calidris ferruginea Dunlin Calidris alpina = Calidris alpina schinzii Ruff Philomachus pugnax Black-tailed Godwit Limosa limosa Bar-tailed Godwit Limosa lapponica Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus Eurasian Curlew Numenius arquata Spotted Redshank Tringa erythropus Common Redshank Tringa totanus Common Greenshank Tringa nebularia Ruddy Turnstone Arenaria interpres
