RENSSEN TA (1981) Dispersion of a local population of Mute Swans Cygnus alar. LIMOSA 54 (3): 89-92.

This paper deals with the dispersion of a population of Mute Swans in SW. Friesland and NW. Overijssel (Netherlands) of which 149 birds were individually marked in 1973-1975 (figure 1, table 1). The birds showed a random distribution around the place of ringing over relatively small distances (figure 2). Only a few birds moved farther than 100 km (maximum distance 425 km). Non-breeding, subadult birds had left the ringing area (here defined as the area within 7 km of the place of ringing) in June-September to undergo a complete moult on the open water of the IJsselmeer (table 3, 5). Of the adults which did not breed or had lost their offspring, some behaved like the non-breeding subadults (table 4). Fewer birds ringed as pullus returned to the ringing area after moulting than birds of the other cohorts. Mute Swan Cygnus olor
