WINKELMAN JE (1981) Rustic Bunting Emberiza rustica in the Netherlands: identification and occurrence. LIMOSA 54 (3): 81-88.

A study has been made of identification and occurrence of Rustic Bunting Emberiza rustica in the Netherlands. Identification features were based on a detailed description of a trapped bird (figuur 1), on an examination of skins (c. 50 skins of Rustic Bunting were examined) and on a perusal of the literature of Rustic Bunting and species with which it has been confused. Characteristics of Rustic Bunting in female plumage include light spot on nape, chestnut rump (feathers with light tips in autumn) and white underparts with chestnut breast-band and chestnut stripes on flanks (tabell). However, some birds hardly show these characteristics and such birds are difficult to identify in the field.
An examination of all published records (tabeI2) reveals that three of them are not acceptable and it is suggested that the Dutch rarities committee should reconsider these records. Sixteen records (concerning 21 birds) are considered acceptable but this number includes three records of which details could not be traced. As in Britain about one-third of the records were in spring and two-thirds in autumn. Most autumn birds were recorded in the coastal region whereas most spring records were done inland.
