MEES GF (1977) Records of Merlin Falco columbarius on the Atlantic Ocean. LIMOSA 50 (3): 114-118.

On 23 October 1974 a European Merlin Falco columbarius in female plumage, flew on board the west bound yacht Westenwind in the central Atlantic Ocean at 21?10' N, 33?30' W, the nearest land being Santo Antiio (Cape Verde Islands), 540 nautical miles ESE. About 24 hours later and 140 miles farther west the bird flew off in a southern direction. The collection of the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie contains the skin of a female Falco columbarius aesalon obtained at sea near Newfoundland. The bird was received from the Rotterdam zoological gardens on 5 January 1914, but would have been captured some weeks prior to that date. Unfortunately it was no longer possible to trace the exact date, position and circumstances under which it was captured Merlin Falco columbarius
