LEBRET T & OUWENEEL GL (1976) Winter observations of Whiskered Terns Chlidonias hybrida on the Rumanian Black Sea-coast. LIMOSA 49 (1): 24-25.

Observations of Whiskered Terns Chlidonias hybrida near Enisala, Dobrogea, Rumania 45? N - 28? 50' E in the last days of November and on December 1st 1974 are described. Our photographs and colour slides were puzzling at first as the immatures showed a faint dark shoulder patch suggesting that the birds might be Black Terns Ch. niger. Taverner observed shoulder patches on immature Whiskered Terns in the Coto Donana in S. Spain in the second half of July. It seems worthwhile to point out once more that the shoulder patches may occur in immature Whiskered Terns and hence are not diagnostic for Black Terns. Moreover remnants of the shoulder patches in the form of a faint black line may be seen as late as December Whiskered Tern Chlidonias hybrida
