White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopus leucotos On November 18, 1972 a i!i White-backed Woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos was observed in a wood near the dunes at Overveen (province Noord-Holland). The attention of the observer was drawn by the peculiar and characteristic posture of the foraging bird, which perched on horizontal branches of beeches rather than on the trunk. The record was accepted as a non-confirmed observation of a new species for the Netherlands.
