SWELM NDV & BRAND DJG (1974) Spring-record of an Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis. LIMOSA 47 (1): 29-32.
An Arctic Warbler Phylloscopus borealis has been seen and heard in the Welstland dunes, south of The Hague on the extraordinary early date 2nd April 1972. This is the third authenticated record for The Netherlands and by far the earliest recorded date forr the whole of Europe. Moreau's statement (1972) that the West Pa1aearctic population of the Arctic: Warble:r winters in India, seems more likely to be true than the theory of Ticehurst (1938), who says that the whole population of Phylloscopus borealis winte:rs in S.E. Asia. It is believed that this individual has left its winte:rquarters earlier, due to an abnormal warm spell in March 1972, and that its occurrence in Western Europe could have been caused by the dominant eastern winds during this period.
