MEIJER R (1974) The Alblasserwaard and the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch as a haunt for geese. LIMOSA 47 (1): 1-15.

This paper deals with the Alblasserwaard and the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch as a haunt for wintering geese. The area is especially of importance because of the great numbeTs of Grey-lag Geese, White-fronted Geese and Bean Geese; furthermore Pink-footed Goose, Snow Goose, Barnacle Goose and Brent Goose were observed. The most important haunt is the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch and the Polder Het Broek and surroundings. Thousands of Grey-lag. Geese, White-fronted Geese and Bean Geese can be found in this area (Table 2, 3, 4 and 5; Fig. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). The second important haunt is situated in the surroundings of the Brandwijkse Donk. Sometimes the geese also appear in other parts of the Alblasserwaard (Table 1, 2, 3 and 5; Fig. 7). The geese mainly feed on grasses and other plants occurring among the grasses; other food is of no importance. The sleeping-places are situated in the Sliedrechtse Biesbosch and the Dordtse Biesbosch, whereas sometimes ponds of former duck-decoys, canals etc. are used. A short survey is given of the future of the area for wintering geese ##### Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons Taiga Bean Goose Anser fabalis Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus = Anser fabalis brachyrhynchus Barnacle Goose Branta leucopsis Dark-bellied Brent Goose Branta bernicla Snow Goose Chen caerulescens
