BOER HF, DE, GROEN, LG,LOTERIJMAN, JA & SIKKEMA, CP (1972) Short announcements: A Dowitcher Limnodromus near the. LIMOSA 45 (3): 186-186.

A Dowitcher Limnodromus spec. has been observed from 4th to 7th September 1971 in the Northern part of the Netherlands (53?23'33 N, 6?9'25 E). The bird foraged with some 50 Snipes Gallinago gallinago in a shallow pond near the Western shore of the Lauwersmeer, a lake which originated from the Lauwerszee estuary after the closing by a dike in 1969. The bird showed dark brown patches on the wings, a greyish head, neck and upper breast and a rusty coloured belly around the legs and therefore apparently still was in a partial postnuptial molt. According to Jehl (1963) this is distinctive for the Long-billed Dowitcher Limnodromus scolopaceus in this time of the year. This is the first record in the Netherlands of a Limnodromus species accepted by the Bird Records Committee of the Netherlands (C.N.A.). This committee has also tentatively accepted the identification as a Limnodromus scolopaceus. Simultaneously with the Dowitcher an American Pectoral Sandpiper has been observed, which is described in the next paper. Unidentified Dowitcher Limnodromus spec.
