REUVER HJA DE (1959) Observations at the nest of a Hoopoe Upupa epops. LIMOSA 32 (3): 148-150.
Eurasian Hoopoe Upupa epops estate 't Reigersnest at Oostvoorne, Holland. The nest was situated in a cavity of a maple; the entrance was at a height of about five feet. An important part of the food for the only young consisted of mole-crickets. It was ascertained that in most cases the parent bird had difficulties in feeding its young with these large preys. This was owing to the quick begging movements of the young together with the fact that the Hoopoe holds its prey at the utmost end of its bill, the prey dangling from the tip of it.
