Voous K.H. & Hens P.A (1950) Accipiter gentilis buteoides (Menzbier) in Nederland. ARDEA 37 (3-4): 167-169
The first specimen of a Northeast European Goshawk, Accipiter gentilis buteoides (Menzbier), collected in the Netherlands has been communicated by Voous (1946): (?) juv. 1857, caught on the North sea by fishermen from Katwijk (Amsterdam Museum). A second specimen is discussed in this paper: ? juv. December 5, 1857, Overveen, near Haarlem, province of North-Holland. Wing 332, tail 242 mm (Leiden Museum). Both specimens originate from the same year, 1857! Attention has been called to the publication by Voipio (1946), who has tried to give more detailed characteristics of the juvenile and adult plumages of the races gentilis, moscoviae and buteoides. The present authors cannot follow Voipio (1946) in distinguishing between moscoviae and those birds which have been indicated as gentilis / buteoides. Indeed, moscoviae seems to be a name applicable to the very inconstant hybrid populations between the races gentilis (Scandinavia), gallinarum (Central Europe) and buteoides (Northeast Russia), apparently inhabiting Finland and West and Central Russia. It is a matter of personal view whether such hybrid populations should be given a name or not. The present authors do not support the use of separate names in this and similar cases.
